How to Replace the Laptop Fan on an Acer Aspire 3000

Laptop computers generate heat while they process information, which can potentially cause the processor or other components to shut down. To keep the system working properly your Acer Aspire 3000 uses a cooling fan that prevents overheating. If the fan goes out you will need to replace it before the internal components experience permanent damage. The fan is connected to the bottom of the laptop's case, but unfortunately it can only be accessed by removing the motherboard and most of the other parts.

Turn off the Acer Aspire 3000 and unplug any cables that are attached to the laptop. Shut the laptop's lid and turn the unit upside down. Slide over the release latch and remove the battery pack.

Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the seven screws holding the plastic memory cover and plastic hard drive cover at the bottom of the laptop case. Pull off both covers.

Spread apart the plastic latches holding the green memory module to the motherboard. Slide the module out of the Aspire 3000. Disconnect the antenna cables from the side of the wireless card, which is positioned above the memory module.

Spread the wireless card's clips and slide it out of the laptop. Locate the cooling fan cable underneath the wireless card. Unplug the cable.

Remove the screws holding the metal hard drive to the Aspire's motherboard. Pull the hard drive out of the laptop.

Remove the screw at the right side of the Aspire's case and then slide the optical drive out of the laptop case. Remove the four screws at the right edge of the case and then the four screws at the left edge of the case.

Turn the Aspire 3000 back over and open the lid. Push the lid all the way so that the laptop is laying flat at 180 degrees. Position the end of a flat-head screwdriver underneath the right end of the locking strip above the 3000's keyboard.

Lift the locking strip upwards and pull it off the Aspire laptop. Remove the screw above the "F10" key with a Phillips screwdriver. Lift up the keyboard and disconnect its attached cable.

Unplug the video cable connecting the LCD screen to the Aspire's motherboard. Remove the two screws securing the LCD screen to the laptop and then pull off the screen.

Pull the palm rest off the Aspire 3000 laptop. Remove the five screws located along the edges of the 3000's motherboard. Grab the left edge of the motherboard and lift it out of the laptop's case.

Remove the screws securing the cooling fan to the bottom of the Aspire's case. Pull off the cooling fan and then set the replacement unit in its place. Reconnect the screws.

Thread the new cooling fan's motherboard cable through the open hole at the center of the case where you previously accessed the wireless cable. Reassemble the Acer Aspire 3000 in the same order you disassembled it.
