Replace keyboards on various laptops

Sony laptop
1. Insert a small flathead screwdriver under the keyboard bezel and carefully lift it up. Continue releasing plastic latches and removing the keyboard bezel with your fingers.

2. Be careful, on some models the bezel might be connected to the motherboard as it shown on the picture above. If you accidentally pulled the cable, connect it back. It is not necessary to disconnect the keyboard bezel from the motherboard in order to remove and replace the keyboard, just put it aside so you can access the keyboard screws.

3. Remove three (or more) screws from the top of the keyboard. Carefully lift up the keyboard from the laptop case.

4. The keyboard connects to the motherboard via a flat ribbon cable. Before you pull the cable from the connector, you’ll have to unlock the connector.

5. Carefully move the connector lock 2-3 millimeters up and after that pull the keyboard cable. To install the keyboard, follow the above mentioned steps in the reverse order.

Toshiba laptop

1. The keyboard bezel removal procedure is similar to the above mentioned Sony Vaio laptop. Lift it up with a small screwdriver and remove using fingers. On most Toshiba laptops the keyboard bezel doesn’t have any circuit board underneath, it’s just a piece of plastic and you don’t have to worry about cables.

2. After the bezel is removed you get an access to the keyboard screws. Remove two (or more) screws. Release the plastic latch pointed with the red arrow and lift up the keyboard. Carefully put the keyboard aside so you can access the connector underneath the keyboard. Do not forget that the keyboard is still connected to the motherboard.

3. Before you remove the keyboard, you’ll have to open the connector and release the flat ribbon cable.

Be careful, this type of connector is fragile. On the left image the connector is closed. On the right image the connector is opened. Unlock the connector by moving the lock up as it shown on the right image and after that release the ribbon cable. Remove and replace the keyboard. For assembly instructions follow all the steps in the reverse order.

Dell Laptop Key

Dell laptops have integrated keyboards that make for easy computing but difficult replacement. When a key falls off of a laptop, you cannot simply switch the keyboard out for one with functional keys. Therefore, knowing how to fix a key that falls off is an important skill for Dell laptop owners.

1Gather the parts of the key that fell off. A laptop key is made up of the key itself, called the key cap, and a couple of small plastic structures that fit together called the key retainer. If you are missing any of the parts, you will not be able to fix the key.

2 Assemble the key retainer. The two pieces of the key retainer fit together with small plastic pegs. In looking at the key retainer, it should be relatively clear how it snaps together. (See "Additional

Resources," below, for links with pictures.) There is a good chance the key retainer will still be attached to the keyboard in its proper place when a key falls off. If this is the case, leave it there. If the retainer comes off with the key cap (if it is still attached to the back of the key cap), snap it out of the key cap with tweezers.

3 Use tweezers to put the key retainer back in place on the keyboard. The key retainer should fit into a metal housing on the keyboard, which usually secures it in four points; one end of the key retainer slips under a couple of metal hooks and the other end snaps into place. If the key retainer did not come off in the first place, you will not have to do this step.

4 Press the key cap back onto the retainer. The key cap should snap and lock onto the mounted retainer under a minimal amount of pressure. Once it is in place, strike the key several times, comparing it to the other keys to make sure it is functioning normally.

HP Pavilion Laptop Keyboard

The keyboard is a critical component of your HP Pavilion laptop. It is important to care for it properly. Cleaning accumulated dust and dirt out of the keyboard using a can of compressed air once a month is a good practice, as is watching for stuck keys and other problems. But even with the   best   of   care,   you   may   need   to   replace   your   laptop's   keyboard   at   some   point.

1Power down your HP Pavilion laptop and turn the unit over. Press the battery release lever and pull the battery out of the laptop.

2 Ground yourself before opening up the laptop. Any static electricity could damage the delicate electrical components in your laptop. Wear a grounding strap to protect your computer, or touch a
piece of metal to discharge any static electricity. A grounding strap--available at electronics stores and on the Internet--is a cloth bracelet that discharges static electricity.

3 Pry up the end of the plate at the top of the keyboard by using the edge of your flat-head screwdriver. Be careful as you work and slowly pry the cover loose. If your Pavilion laptop uses retaining screws to secure the keyboard, flip the laptop over and remove them. Place the screws in a small cup or butter container to keep them from getting lost.

4 Remove the screws that are used to secure the keyboard to the laptop case. Carefully lift the keyboard free of the case and flip it over the touchpad. The keyboard is attached to the motherboard with a cable, so take care not to stretch or break that cable.

5 Disconnect the flat cable from the keyboard and carefully pull it loose. Remove the replacement keyboard from its packaging and attach the cable to it. Set the replacement keyboard in place and replace the screws that hold it in place. Continue to reassemble the case, then replace the battery and the AC power, turn on the laptop and test the new keyboard.
